Ten Years Ago: An Elian Gonzales Update
Who could forget the little six year old who captivated and divided the nation just exactly ten years ago. He seemed so young, an innocent pawn in a cold war struggle that just won’t die
Fast forward to today, and little Elian is now 16, almost a man.
He’s moved on and holds no grudge toward his mother’s side of the family, even if his father does.
But the one thing that sticks out like a sore thumb here is that no matter how much things change, they still remain the same.
Ten years ago, Elian was used by his anti-Castro relatives as a tool to make a political statement. Ten years later, Elian is celebrated at a rally in Cuba as a taller, deeper voiced tool of a struggling country trying to justify its Communist government.
One can barley wait another ten years to check in on 26 year old Gonzalez and see how he’s made up his own mind.
If an 18 year old Elian shows up in the bay of Miami on an inner tube, I’ll laugh myself silly.
