“When you walk in,” he said, “you should be able to get a sense of the house’s original sound — like when the wind blows on it or when you step on a stair — and even its smell. That’s the charm that does not exist in a concrete form building.”
It’s amazing how many of us are willing to chuck authentic history in the bin, while flocking to editorialized versions. Why bother saving New Orleans when there’s a sanitized replica at Disney Land? And why bother saving original windows when you’re the only house on the street without environment destroying vinyl replacements?
After all, isn’t blindly following others much easier than putting a little effort into it.
Taksim is a main transportation hub and a popular destination for both tourists and the native population of Istanbul.
İstiklal Caddesi (Independence Avenue), a long pedestrian shopping street, ends at this square, and a nostalgic tram runs from the square along the avenue, ending near the Tünel (1875) which is the world’s second-oldest subway line after London’s Underground (1863).
pop!talk correspondent Ebonia was invited to the opening of the “12 Dresses for Istanbul: Fashion’s Comment on Literature by Spanish Designers” exhibit at the Istanbul Fashion Academy. The exhibition, first organized in Tokyo and Beijing, has now moved to Istanbul with some alterations, and will run from 20 September – 20 November 2008.
The exhibit includes specially designed dresses by Spanish designers such as Agatha Ruiz de la Prada, Devota & Lomba, Francis Montesinos, Victorio & Lucchino, Amaya Arzuaga, Alma Aguilar, Ailanto, Spastor, Juan Duyos, Miriam Ocariz, Davidelfin and Lydia Delgado. The outfits are inspired by the works of world-renowned Spanish writers, including Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Alvaro Mutis, Juan Gelman, Carlos Fuentes, Miguel Delibes, Jose Angel Valente and Carmen Martin Gaite. The aim of the exhibition is to introduce Spanish language and culture to Turkey.
What a night it was, rubbing shoulders with the Turkish Culture and Tourism Minister Ertuğrul Günay, Spanish Culture Ministry Undersecretary Dolores Carrion and Spanish Fashion Designers Association President Modesto Lomba. Not to mention a “pop!talk exclusive” interview with the hottest fashion designer of Spain, Davidelfin.
Ebonia has to return to Istanbul on the 25th of July and she is praying that someone will figure out how to unlock the iPhone 3G so she can buy one before she flies out.
pop!talk reality, she may have to go home without one.
