The movement to legitimize street art got a boost last year when the Associated Press accused artist Shepard Fairey of copyright violation for using a photo taken by Mannie Garcia in the famous Obama “Hope” campaign poster, and the artist counter-sued claiming his use of the image was fair use.
Shepard Fairey said he transformed the literal depiction of Obama into a “stunning, abstracted and idealized visual image that creates powerful new meaning and conveys a radically different message.”
That’s probably why Comedy Central comedian Stephen Colbert wanted Shepard Fairey to promote his “historic visit” to the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. The Shepard Fairey art depicted the comedian wearing laurels and wielding an Olympic torch while riding a giant bald eagle in faux-gung-ho pose.
If you’re a fan or collector of art for social change, you can buy authentic out of print Shepard Fairey art prints online, including his Japanese Fabric Pattern Sets, which brought the artist back to his printmaking roots.
I don’t recall seeing any artwork from Shepard Fairey during my visit to the The Armory Show 2010 yesterday, but that’s probably because the Obey Giant thinks he’s too famous — and in a league of his own — to mingle with other artists.

A lot has been written in the press lately about the secret lives of girls, but what about the easy girl games they play?

Tweens, queens and princesses alike can now enjoy endless hours of fun girl games from the privacy of your own home. Not matter how young you are, you’ll no doubt enjoy endless hours of girl games, such as jewelry design, dressup, cooking, makeovers and kissing boys (or President Obama!).
For all you girls out there with crushes, you can relive your high school days or play dressup with your favorite celebrities like Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, Taylor Lautner, Robert Pattinson, or Justin Bieber!
Maybe someday the secret lives of easy boys and the games they play will be available. Until then, it’s A-OK to play girl games — as long as it’s done secretly!

Guess which Republican Stepford wife came out of her self-medicated stupor to support the NOH8 Campaign?
If the title of this post didn’t already give the answer away, she’s Cindy McCain, the wife of former US presidential candidate and Senator John McCain! This is monumental because the McCains are one of the most well-known Republican families in recent history, and her support signals a dramatic shift for the Republican party during the advent of the utterly ridiculous and laughable Prop 8 trial.
“Although we had worked with Meghan McCain before and were aware of her own position, we’d never really thought the cause might be something her mother would get behind, ” noted the NOH8 Campaign on their website.
“Aligning yourself with the platform of gay marriage as a Republican still tends to be very stigmatic, but Cindy McCain wanted to participate in the campaign to show people that party doesn’t matter – marriage equality isn’t a Republican issue any more than it is a Democratic issue. It’s about human rights, and everybody being treated equally in the eyes of the law that runs and protects this country.”
No word yet from John McCain about his position on gay marriage, but if his point of view strays from The McCain Girls, you can bet pills won’t be the only thing popped before bedtime in that household! Now if only other Republicans can come to their senses and realize that the “Moral High Horse” steered by the Christian Right is what’s truly and fundamentally destroying their party and not the Obamabots.

Watch the full version of Martin Luther King’s famous “I Have A Dream” speech, dramatically delivered from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, and be inspired — today, tomorrow and the day after that.
More than 40 years ago, MLK’s soaring rhetoric demanding racial justice and an integrated society became a mantra for the black community. The speech electrified America, and the words proved to be a touchstone for understanding the social and political upheaval of the time and gave our nation a vocabulary to express the reality that many were quick to ignore.
The key message is that all people are created equal and, although not the case in America at the time, Dr. King was passionate about equality being the case for the future.
Many of President Barack Obama’s biggest supporters say his soaring rhetoric mirrors that of Dr. King, but I respectfully disagree. What I do agree with is, without MLK’s speech, Obama’s dream to be the first black president (Bill Clinton doesn’t count) would not be a reality.
